Professor

Jongeun Lee

Jongeun Lee joined Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) in August of 2009 and is Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Dr. Lee received his B.S. (1997) and M.S. (1999) in Electrical Engineering, and his Ph.D. (2004) in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science all from Seoul National University.

Prior to joining UNIST, Dr. Lee was a Senior Researcher at Samsung Electronics SoC Research Center (2004.1-2007.10) and a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Arizona State University (2007.11-2009.8). Dr. Lee is a recipient of Postdoctoral Research Fellowship from KRF (Korea Research Foundation) in 2007.

Dr. Lee has published more than 70 papers in refereed journals and conferences as well as a book chapter and several patents. His research interest includes deep learning processors, reconfigurable processor, and compilation for low power, reliability, and multi-core processors.

Students

Minsang Yu

Minsang Yu joined the lab in February, 2022, as a master’s program student. He majored in electronic engineering. Before joining the lab, he worked as an assistant researcher at Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI) and developed the IoT Edge Device for sensor data synchronization for digital twin. His research interests include AI hardware accelerator design and electronic design automation with machine learning.

Minuk Hong joined the lab in February, 2022, as a master’s program student. He majored in electronic engineering. His research interests include hardware accelerator design with HDL and HLS for AI application.

Minjoon Song

Minjoon Song joined the lab in February, 2021, as a master’s program student. He majored in Automotive-IT Convergence Engineering from Kookmin University. His research interest lies in the intersection between the architecture and compiler for NPUs (Neuromorphic Processing Units). Mr. Song has graduated with a Master’s degree, and joined BOS Semiconductors, a global fabless company with a focus on automotive.

Azat Azamat started his M.S. program and joined the lab in September, 2020. He majored in computer science with minor in mathematics from Nazarbayev University, Kazakhstan, in 2020. His research interests include deep learning and cost-efficient accelerator design.

Jounghyun Kim started his M.S. Program in AI Graduate School in September, 2020. He received the bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering from KyungHee University, South Korea, in 2019. His research interests include efficient deep learning architecture. Mr. Kim has graduated with a Master’s degree, and is now with LaonRoad (라온로드), an AI company based in Bundang, Korea.

Chenghao Quan

Chenghao Quan joined the lab in September, 2020, as a Master-PhD combined student. His research interests include deep learning and hardware-aware deep learning.

Faaiz Asim

Faaiz Asim joined the lab in September, 2020, as a Master-PhD combined student. His research ineterests include efficient deep learning architectures and acceleration of deep neural networks for low-power systems.

Sugil Lee

Sugil Lee joined the lab in March, 2017 as a master’s program student. He majored in mathematics at KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) with some background in computer science. He received his masters degree in computer science and engineering from UNIST in 2019, and is continuing as a Ph.D. student in the same lab. His research interests include machine learning and hardware-aware deep learning.

Sangyun Oh

Sangyun Oh started his M.S. program in March, 2015. His research interests include (i) reconfigurable architecture and (ii) acceleration of deep neural networks for low-power systems.

He received a best paper award at KCS conference, 2017.



    Graduated Students

    Jun Gi Lee

    Jun Gi Lee joined the lab in March, 2019, as a master’s program student. He majored in Mechatronics Engineering from Chungnam National University. He received the master’s degree in electrical engineering from UNIST in February 2021, with a thesis titled “NP-CGRA: Extending CGRAs for Efficient Processing of Light-weight Deep Neural Networks.” After graduation, he joined ElroiLab, a startup in Seoul specializing in AI (Artificial Intelligence) and robotics.

    Hyeonuk Sim

    Hyeonuk Sim joined the lab in March, 2015 as a master-Ph.D combined degree program. He received the B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science and engineering from Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology, Ulsan, South Korea, in 2015 and 2021, respectively.

    He is currently working as a Staff Researcher with the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, Suwon 16678, South Korea. His research interests include energy-efficient accelerator design for specific fields, such as artificial neural networks and stochastic computing.

    He won the Naver Ph.D. fellowship in 2017.

    Segi Lee

    Segi Lee joined the lab in September, 2018 as a master student. He received his BSc in Electrical Engineering from UNIST. His research interests include digital hardware chip/FPGA design and implementation for deep learning.

    In July 2020 he joined Satrec Initiative Co., Ltd., a space and aviation technology company, in Daejon, Korea, in the Defense Systems Division, as a hardware engineer.

    Jooyeon Choi

    Jooyeon Choi

    Jooyeon Choi joined the lab in September, 2018 as a master student. She received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology, Ulsan, South Korea, in 2018 and 2021, respectively. 

    She is currently working as a hardware designer with DeepInSight, Seongnam-si 13449, South Korea. Her current research interests include deep neural network processing and accelerator hardware.

    Giju Jung

    Giju Jung joined the lab in August, 2018 as a master student. He received the BSc degree from UNIST with his first major in Computer Engineering, his second major in Biotechnology. His research interests include neuromorphic computing systems and efficient deep learning.

    After graduation he joined 3View.Com Inc., Suwon-si, South Korea, as an engineer specialized in AI.

    Aidyn Zhakatayev

    Aidyn Zhakatayev started his M.S. program in September, 2016. He majored in EE with a double major in CSE from UNIST, which should give him a perfect background for his research into various aspects of stochastic computing and deep neural networks. He enjoys football, and is from Kazakstan.

    He is the first author of a paper presented at Design Automation Conference, June 2018. After graduation he joined Deeplite, an AI-driven deep neural network optimizer company, in Montréal, Canada.

    Daewoo Kim

    Daewoo Kim joined the lab in August, 2016 for his M.S. program staring in Fall, 2016. He has a CS background but is also very competent in various areas of hardware design including processor design, accelerator design for emerging application such as deep learning, and high level synthesis.

    After graduation he joined LG Electronics, in the Home Appliance Division, in Guro-gu, Seoul, Korea.

    Atul Rahman

    Atul Rahman is a graduate student, beginning his M.S. program in September, 2014. His research interests include high-level synthesis and approximate/stochastic computing.

    He won the Samsung HumanTech Award in 2016, and is the first author of two papers presented in the Design, Automation and Test in Europe (DATE) Conference, in 2016 and 2017. In 2016 he joined Samsung Electronics, in Suwon, Korea.

    Hongsik Lee

    Hongsik Lee entered UNIST in March, 2014. He worked on the problem of model-driven application mapping for CGRA processors resulting in a publication in DAC.

    In 2016 he joined Busan Transportation Corporation (Humetro), Busan, Korea, in the Department of Signal & Communication as a design engineer.

    Dong Nguyen

    Dong Nguyen entered UNIST in March, 2014. He has co-authored many papers in the area of deep learning and compiler, including one he presented as the first author in the International Symposium on Code Generation and Optimization (CGO), held in Barcelona, March 2016.

    Seongseok Seo

    Seongseok Seo entered UNIST in March, 2012, though he started to come to the lab about six months earlier, and worked as an intern in the lab during the winter break. He graduated from Ulsan University.

    He is a recipient of Dongbu HiTek Best Paper Award at the 21st Korean Conference on Semiconductors (KCS), together with Yeonghun Jeong and Prof. Lee.

    In 2014 he joined LG Electronics, in the CTO Division, in Seoul, Korea, as a hardware designer.

    Yeonghun Jeong

    Yeonghun Jeong joined the lab in September 2011, as M.S. student. He is interested in Computer Architecture. Yeonghun graduated from Department of Electrical Engineering of Pusan National University (March 2011).

    He received Dongbu HiTek Best Paper Award at the 21st Korean Conference on Semiconductors (KCS), together with Seongseok Seo and Prof. Lee.

    Currently he is working for SAP Korea in Seoul. Previously he worked for LG Electronics, in the CTO Division, Seoul, Korea.

    Toan Mai

    Toan Xuan Mai

    Toan Xuan Mai entered Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) in March, 2011, as M.S. student. His research interest includes Compiler and Reconfigurable Architectures. Toan Mai received his B.S. in Computer Engineering with Honors from the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology in Vietnam (Apr 2011).

    While at UNIST, he earned the Love Dream Scholarship from the Student Aid Foundation of the Korean Government, which awards eight excellent Vietnamese/Chinese graduate students annually across Korea.

    After graduation he joined Global Cybersoft in Vietnam.
